Apple CEO John Ternus Positions iPhone as an "Intelligent Personal Hub" Built on Personal Data
Apple CEO John Ternus outlined a vision of the iPhone as an "intelligent personal hub" during the company's September 9 event, saying "AI can become even more useful when it brings together your life with the apps, services, and products you use every day." Siri AI arrived with iOS 27 on September 14 as an opt-in beta, alongside the iPhone 18's release.
Ternus said the iPhone's advantage comes from understanding user context, including "your calendar, your relationships, your routines, the most private details of your daily life." He contrasted Apple's approach with competitors, saying "others see that data as something to collect and store. They move it to their servers and ask you to trust them," and pointed to Apple's Private Cloud Compute system, claiming "nobody, not even Apple, can access what's yours."
Apple held 55.9% of the U.S. smartphone installed base at the end of 2025, up 5.9 points year over year, according to an April Recon Analytics report, while more than 90% of iPhone users say they're likely to stick with Apple on their next upgrade, per Statista.
RTM Nexus CEO Dominick Miserandino said Apple's real strategy is device sales rather than AI leadership, telling TheStreet the company is "using AI to give you a reason to ditch your three-year-old iPhone and drop $1,200 on a new one."
A 2026 SOC 3 examination found reasonable assurance that Apple's Private Cloud Compute provisioning controls operated effectively, though the audit did not evaluate Apple Intelligence itself. Separately, a September 2025 Pew Research Center report found 57% of Americans rate AI's societal risks as high, while a June 2026 Pew report found about half of U.S. adults now use AI chatbots.
