Vanguard Highlights How a Consistent $100 Monthly Investment Strategy Compounds Over Time

Vanguard Makes the Case for Starting Small With a $100 Monthly Investing Strategy
Vanguard published a chart projecting how monthly contributions grow at a hypothetical 6% annual return, anchoring the model on $100 rather than a larger amount to emphasize that regularity, not size, drives the strategy's power. The firm's "How America Saves 2026" report puts the average 401(k) balance at $167,970 and the median at $44,115.
Vanguard's chief executive Salim Ramji wrote in his May 2026 shareholder letter that during April 2025 tariff-related volatility, 93% of Vanguard investors left their portfolios untouched, and those who acted chose to buy over sell by a five-to-one ratio. "You stayed the course and stayed invested, a time-tested way to build wealth for the long term," Ramji wrote.
The average savings rate across Vanguard plans rose to an all-time high of 12% of income in 2025, while about 6% of participants took a hardship withdrawal, up from 5% the prior year, with a median withdrawal of $1,900. The report also found 45% of 401(k) participants increased their contribution rate in 2025, driven partly by automatic escalation features.
Vanguard's guide recommends linking a bank account for automatic transfers, matching investments to the saver's timeline, enabling dividend reinvestment, and revisiting the contribution amount yearly to account for pay increases.
