Affirm CEO Max Levchin Flags Consumer Strain and Rising Gas Prices Despite Record Q4 Earnings Beat
Affirm Holdings ($AFRM) posted a record fiscal fourth-quarter earnings report, outperforming Wall Street estimates across every key operational metric. Revenue climbed 33% year-over-year to $1.17 billion (beating the $1.11 billion consensus), while gross merchandise volume (GMV) rose 36% to $14.1 billion.
Despite the robust financial performance and upbeat fiscal first-quarter guidance of $1.19 billion to $1.22 billion in revenue, CEO Max Levchin used the earnings spotlight to deliver a sobering warning regarding the financial health of everyday U.S. consumers:
* The Gas Price Squeeze: With the national average for regular gasoline sitting at $4.09 a gallon, Levchin noted that consumers cannot ignore persistently elevated fuel costs which severely impact working households, daily commutes, and gig economy work.
* Inflation-Driven Demand: The broader inflationary backdrop is actively driving traffic toward buy-now, pay-later (BNPL) platforms. Rather than signaling pure discretionary luxury spending, surging demand reflects consumers tightly budgeting and managing cash flow to cope with rising living expenses.
* The Dual Signal: While installment tools serve as a disciplined budgeting mechanism, heavy reliance on them highlights underlying consumer stress. Maintaining rigorous credit discipline and monitoring 30-day delinquency rates remain critical as elevated price pressures persist over the long term.
