Ben Thompson: AI Capex Financing Shifted From Free Cash Flow to Debt to Equity in About a Year

Stratechery's Ben Thompson said AI capex financing has moved from free cash flow to debt to equity in roughly a year, calling it a timing bet rather than a deployment risk, in an interview with Patrick O'Shaughnessy on Invest Like the Best.
Thompson pointed to $GOOGL's surprise equity raise and $NVDA's roughly $500 billion neocloud backstop financing, which taps pension funds and insurance floats, as evidence the capital stack ran out of cheaper options in about twelve months. He said that if revenue doesn't arrive before fabs and data centers pay back their capital, the setup resembles the dot-com and 1870s railroad bubbles, though he expects AI's capabilities to keep improving regardless of any financial blowup.
Dan Ives has repeatedly argued the opposite, saying AI infrastructure spend is still early and revenue keeps outpacing the buildout. Thompson said the funding waterfall — from free cash flow to debt to equity — is the leading indicator to watch, with a further step down, such as securitized vendor financing, serving as the bearish tell.
