$NVO Unveils 2030-2035 Pipeline Targets as Competition in Obesity Intensifies
$NVO has outlined a long-term pipeline strategy aimed at restoring growth, but investors appear to have been looking for more specific near-term targets.
Novo Nordisk is targeting more than $23 billion in pipeline sales by 2035 and plans to launch more than five potential multi-blockbuster drugs by the end of the decade.
By 2030, the company expects to have at least five Phase 3 programs in obesity and diabetes, plus at least five more across other therapeutic areas.
Novo also aims to serve more than 60 million patients globally, maintain broadly stable operating margins and build enough oral GLP-1 capacity to serve 10 times more obesity patients.
For 2026 through 2030, management expects revenue growth to run broadly in line with industry peers.
The challenge is competition.
Management says the obesity market has reached an “unprecedented level” of competition, with nearly every major pharmaceutical company now pursuing the category.
$NVO has already lost ground to $LLY in obesity drugs, while semaglutide exclusivity is beginning to weaken in some markets and major Ozempic and Wegovy patents are set to expire early next decade.
The company is also cutting another 4,000 jobs, bringing total restructuring-related reductions to roughly 13,000.
CEO Mike Doustdar summed up the situation simply: “We need to work harder, and we will.”
For investors, the key question is whether Novo’s next generation of obesity and diabetes treatments can arrive fast enough to offset rising competition and future patent pressure.
