BREAKING: Commercial and Industrial Loans Surge $254 Billion Year-Over-Year
Commercial and industrial loans at U.S. commercial banks surged $254 billion year-over-year in the week ending Aug. 21, reaching $2.93 trillion, the highest level since June 2020 and the largest year-over-year increase since March 2023. Loans jumped $8.4 billion in the past week alone, leaving the total just $137 billion below the May 2020 peak of $3.07 trillion.
Such a rapid increase is typically a sign of improving credit demand and business activity, particularly when it coincides with rising capital expenditure. The surge comes despite inflation remaining above 3.0% for five consecutive months, suggesting businesses are increasing borrowing even as price pressures stay elevated.
