SBF Reportedly Paid Seven Figures for Uniswap.com Before Uniswap Later Acquired It for Free
Uniswap founder Hayden Adams says Sam Bankman-Fried once paid more than $1 million for the Uniswap.com domain after the Uniswap team refused the original owner’s seven-figure asking price.
According to Adams, SBF then redirected the domain to a fork of Uniswap, which he described as an attempt to “flex” on the team.
The move ultimately backfired.
Adams says the domain’s malicious use gave Uniswap’s legal team grounds to pursue control of the domain.
Uniswap eventually acquired Uniswap.com without paying for it.
The story highlights just how valuable major crypto brand domains became during the last cycle, but also how aggressive domain tactics can create legal risk when they are used to impersonate or redirect traffic from an established protocol.
For Uniswap, the end result was gaining control of a domain it had previously refused to buy at a seven-figure price.
