Meta, Microsoft, Google and Amazon are set to spend a combined roughly $650 billion on capex in 2026, up from under $150 billion in 2022, according to an analysis. Yet 71% of Americans say they would fight a data center in their town, and blocked projects have just hit a record.
The analysis said the capex is the easy part, and that permits, power and politics will decide whether the AI trade keeps compounding.
