Coinbase prepares institutional custody for post-quantum cryptography

$COIN is developing post-quantum protections for its institutional custody infrastructure, which safeguards approximately $250 billion in assets for clients including BlackRock.
Coinbase Head of Cryptography Yehuda Lindell says the custody architecture is being designed to adapt to whichever post-quantum signature scheme Bitcoin eventually adopts.
The strategy also includes a hardware fallback using programmable Hardware Security Modules if a future Bitcoin signature scheme proves incompatible with traditional multi-party computation. The work is preventative and addresses a potential long-term cryptographic risk rather than a current compromise.
