U.S. Financial Conditions Are Easiest Since 1997

Financial conditions in the U.S. are now extraordinarily loose.
The Bloomberg U.S. Financial Conditions Index has climbed to roughly +1.29, its most accommodative level since 1997 — meaning conditions are now easier than at any point this century.
The index tracks stress across U.S. money, bond and equity markets, capturing how easy and inexpensive it is for households, companies and investors to access financing.
That is striking because long-term Treasury yields remain elevated.
Yet strong equity markets, abundant liquidity and favorable conditions across other parts of the financial system are keeping the broader financial environment highly accommodative.
Loose financial conditions can support economic growth and asset prices.
But they can also complicate the Federal Reserve’s job if easier access to capital keeps demand strong and adds renewed pressure to inflation.
The market is effectively delivering stimulus even without the Fed aggressively cutting rates.
