Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Friedrich Merz, could suffer heavy losses in upcoming regional elections, according to the Financial Times. The CDU's projected vote share is just 5-5.5%, down from 13% in 2021 and barely above the threshold needed to secure seats.
The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) leads polling at 37-38%. In Berlin, the CDU trails Die Linke by roughly five points.
If confirmed, the result would mark the CDU's worst performance in a postwar German state election.
