Gen Z Is Blurring the Line Between Investing and Sports Betting
Gen Z investors are increasingly treating sports betting like part of their financial strategy.
A Betterment survey of 1,000 U.S. retail investors found that 26% of Gen Z respondents include sports betting in their financial plans.
That compares with:
14% of millennials.
6% of Gen X.
Just 1% of baby boomers.
The more concerning finding is where the money is coming from.
More than half of Gen Z investors surveyed said they redirected money originally meant for investing into sports bets during the past year.
Around 14% said they did so multiple times per month.
Betterment CEO Sarah Levy summed up the concern:
“When a prediction market or sportsbook starts to feel like a retirement strategy, we have a problem.”
There is one important caveat.
The survey covered people who already identify as retail investors, not Gen Z as a whole.
Still, the trend is hard to ignore.
For younger investors, the line between investing, speculation and gambling is getting increasingly blurry.
