OpenAI Says Unreleased Model Solved Navier-Stokes Millennium Problem
OpenAI says an unreleased model, described as significantly more capable than GPT-6 Astra, produced a proof showing that a smooth 3D fluid can develop a singularity in finite time, addressing one of mathematics' six remaining Millennium Prize Problems.
The result took about 88 hours, scaled from 100 to as many as 10,000 coordinating AI agents, generated 2.7 million messages, and used roughly 130 billion output tokens, with OpenAI spending millions of dollars on compute. On OpenAI's internal benchmark of difficult open math problems, Astra solved about 10%, while the unreleased model scored closer to 50%.
OpenAI says the 165-page proof has been formalized and computer-verified, though outside mathematicians still need to independently validate the result. The announcement has also sparked a dispute with researchers Levent Alpöge and Tristan Buckmaster over related fluid-dynamics work; OpenAI says its researchers and agents did not access their unpublished work and that the proofs and results differ materially.
