TSMC chip-equipment needs nearly double as AI demand accelerates
TSMC $TSM says its estimate for quarterly chipmaking-equipment purchases is now roughly 1.9 times the level projected in December as the company races to expand AI-related capacity.
TSMC is currently building and outfitting approximately 20 factories globally, compared with a typical pace of only four or five projects at once.
Customers including $NVDA and $AMD continue to increase orders, and TSMC says that even while expanding at roughly four to five times its normal pace, it still cannot fully satisfy demand.
The scale of the buildout highlights the extraordinary capital intensity behind the current AI semiconductor cycle.
