FBI investigates massive leak of U.S. and Canadian identity documents

The FBI has reportedly opened an investigation into a major data breach involving more than 153 million U.S. and Canadian driver's licenses.
A dark-web service called Nexus is reportedly selling scans of the licenses along with more than 10 million ID cards and millions of travel and medical documents.
Nearly 400,000 additional records reportedly appeared within a 24-hour period, while Nexus claims the data was continuously exfiltrated for more than a year from a large identity-verification provider serving Fortune 500 companies.
The scale of the alleged breach raises significant identity-theft and cybersecurity risks, particularly because government-issued photo IDs can be used in account verification, fraud and social-engineering attacks.
