PeckShield Reports 50 Major Crypto Hacks Costing $136 Million in August Led by TectonicFi Exploit

Blockchain security firm PeckShield revealed that the crypto industry suffered 50 major hacks in August, representing a 67% increase from the 30 incidents recorded in July. Despite the higher frequency of attacks, total investor losses dropped by 49.5% to $136.3 million compared to July's $270 million.
Key highlights from the August exploit report include:
- TectonicFi Exploit: The Tectonic.cro lending protocol exploit accounted for roughly $74 million (over 54%) of the month's total losses, ranking as the fourth-largest crypto theft of 2026 year-to-date. The Cronos blockchain paused its entire chain to freeze remaining funds after the attacker bridged about $6 million to Ethereum.
- Top Exploits Concentration: August's ten largest exploits—led by TectonicFi ($74M), Moonwell ($8.7M), Termlabs ($8.5M), and Coinsbuy ($7.9M)—cost investors approximately $123.34 million, making up about 90.5% of the total monthly losses.
- Year-to-Date Context: According to TRM Labs data, attackers carried out 207 separate crypto hacks during the first half of 2026, costing investors a total of $972 million.
