Kalshi Investigates Suspicious Bets on White House Press Secretary Selection
Prediction market platform Kalshi is reportedly investigating suspicious wagers placed on Katie Zacharia becoming President Donald Trump's White House press secretary before the appointment became public.
According to The Wall Street Journal, Zacharia's implied probability was approximately 1% when some of the bets were placed. One $19 wager is reportedly set to pay $1,896, while two additional bets of roughly $74 and $80, placed about 20 minutes before media reports, could return $3,689 and $4,023 respectively.
The timing has raised questions about whether any participants possessed nonpublic information about the appointment. However, correctly predicting an unlikely outcome does not, by itself, establish insider trading or misconduct.
The investigation highlights the market integrity challenges facing political prediction platforms, particularly when contracts depend on decisions known to a limited number of government officials before public announcements.
