China adds offline payment codes to digital yuan app
China’s digital yuan app now supports offline payment codes.
The feature allows users to make payments even without a stable internet connection.
It currently supports wallets from five Chinese banks, according to the Digital RMB Operations Management Center.
For China’s financial system, the bigger signal is that the digital yuan is moving closer to practical everyday payment use.
Offline functionality matters because it makes CBDC payments more resilient in areas with weak connectivity or temporary network disruptions.
The key question is whether this feature helps drive broader adoption of the digital yuan beyond pilot-style usage.
