BofA Reiterates $AMZN Buy Rating After Leaked $6.8 Billion Same-Day Delivery Plan
Bank of America analyst Justin Post reiterated a buy rating and $320 price target on $AMZN on September 16, hours after internal documents described a tenfold expansion of its same-day delivery network, codenamed Project Mercury, first reported by Business Insider.
The plan would take Amazon's Sub Same-Day fulfillment footprint from roughly 85 sites to more than 1,000 by 2031, placing a facility within 10 miles of 80% of U.S. Prime subscribers. Each site would stock about 90,000 fast-moving items. Per the internal documents, the plan calls for $6.8 billion in U.S. same-day capacity spending across 2026 and 2027, an estimated $7.1 billion in economic value over 10 years, positive cash flow by 2030, and same-day sites handling about 28% of Amazon-fulfilled units by 2029. An Amazon spokesperson said the projections are preliminary.
Post called the $6.8 billion commitment manageable against Amazon's roughly $50 billion annual retail capital budget, with modest direct financial impact, but said the same-day push is "very important strategically" against Walmart, whose roughly 5,000 U.S. stores already put fast delivery within 10 miles of 90% of the population. His $320 target implies about 30% upside from Amazon's $245.96 close on September 16, valuing AWS at nine times 2027 estimated sales and third-party retail at 2.5 times. Wall Street rates $AMZN a strong buy on average, with a consensus price target near $334, per TipRanks.
