FinHarbor CEO Warns DeFi Protocols Must Embed Compliance Architecture from Inception to Bridge TradFi
Speaking at the Cointelegraph CONNECT summit, FinHarbor CEO Ilya Podoynitsyn emphasized that regulatory compliance cannot be treated as an afterthought or retrofitted onto decentralized finance (DeFi) architectures once products are deployed. He argued that protocols must integrate legal and risk governance mechanisms into core smart contracts from inception.
The requirement has become critical as decentralized protocols increasingly attempt to bridge with institutional capital and traditional finance (TradFi). Podoynitsyn pointed out that legacy financial institutions operate under strict anti-money laundering (AML), know-your-customer (KYC), and capital-reserve standards that cannot interact with completely permissionless or non-compliant infrastructure.
He concluded that future institutional adoption depends on native compliance layers—such as zero-knowledge identity proofs and programmatic permissioning—which enable decentralized applications to satisfy global regulatory frameworks without compromising underlying cryptographic settlement guarantees.
