SEC proposes rules formally recognizing blockchain in securities infrastructure

BIG MOVE: The SEC has proposed updated transfer-agent rules that would formally recognize the use of blockchain technology in securities offerings and share transfers.
The proposal would modernize regulations that have remained largely unchanged since the late 1970s and early 1980s, reflecting the shift toward electronic recordkeeping and tokenized market infrastructure.
The proposal will now move into a 60-day public comment period.
If adopted, the framework could provide clearer regulatory support for blockchain-based ownership records and tokenized securities in U.S. capital markets.
