Bitcoin Tops $86,000 in 8-Month High as Short Squeeze Triggers $454M in Liquidations

Bitcoin reached an intraday peak of $86,282 on September 21, marking its highest price level since late January. The 5.8% daily gain was fueled largely by a massive short squeeze, with on-chain analytics platform CoinGlass reporting roughly $454 million in Bitcoin short liquidations over a 24-hour window, contributing to over $784 million in total crypto short liquidations across the broader market.
Alternative crypto assets rallied alongside the move, with Ethereum climbing 6.6% to $2,760, $XRP advancing 8.5% to $1.50, and Hyperliquid's native token (HYPE) reaching a fresh all-time high of $95.99 following the rollout of collateralized lending features. Institutional accumulation continued in parallel, as MicroStrategy acquired 950 BTC for $75.7 million to raise its total holdings to 846,000 BTC, while Bitmine added 27,562 ETH to reach 5,983,940 ETH.
The rebound materialized despite headwinds from a recent Federal Reserve interest rate hike and the Senate cloture vote failure on the CLARITY Act. Bullish momentum was reinforced by multiple pro-crypto policy actions from U.S. regulators and lawmakers, including an SEC five-year "Innovation Exemption" for tokenized equity trading, a CFTC developer no-action position, and House committee passage of both the Digital Asset Tax Certainty Act and the American Reserve Modernization Act of 2026.
