U.S. foreclosure filings jump 21% year over year
About 227,500 U.S. properties filed for foreclosure in the first half of the year.
That is up 21% from a year ago and roughly 30% from two years ago.
The increase points to growing stress among parts of the housing market as elevated mortgage rates and affordability pressures continue to squeeze borrowers.
Foreclosure activity is still only one piece of the housing picture, but the direction is becoming harder to ignore.
For the U.S. economy, housing stress is another channel through which higher rates are feeding into household finances.
