Stanford faces scrutiny over AI-altered promotional image

Stanford University's Residential and Dining Enterprises reportedly used generative AI to substantially alter a university photograph used in advertising, including replacing students and changing physical characteristics.
According to the Stanford Review, student Billy Ramirez said he discovered that his appearance had been replaced in the altered image and criticized the use of his original likeness in that process.
The episode highlights emerging governance and disclosure questions around institutional use of generative AI in marketing, particularly when real people are materially altered or removed from source imagery.
