XRP Ledger Patches Decade-Old Vulnerability That Could Have Enabled Unauthorized Token Creation
XRP Ledger developers have reportedly patched a critical security vulnerability dating back to 2015 that could have allowed attackers to create and spend unauthorized $XRP without providing the required funds.
The flaw potentially threatened the integrity of XRP's supply accounting, raising concerns about the possibility of billions of dollars in improperly created tokens. XRP's originally established supply is 100 billion tokens.
Security researchers reportedly demonstrated the vulnerability, prompting an emergency software update released on September 25. The discovery highlights the importance of continued security reviews even for blockchain systems that have operated for many years.
According to RippleX, there is no evidence that the vulnerability was exploited on public networks. The reported risk therefore represents a potential exploit scenario rather than confirmed unauthorized XRP creation.
