Elon Musk Floats Space-Based Data Centers Amid Texas Development Uncertainty
Elon Musk has suggested that space-based data centers are becoming an increasingly attractive idea as political developments raise questions about the future of AI infrastructure investment in Texas.
“Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now,” Musk said following reports that Democrats had won both the Texas governorship and the state's US Senate race.
Incoming Governor Gina Hinojosa has proposed restrictions on new data center development, including a potential moratorium. Estimates suggest approximately 13 gigawatts of planned Texas capacity could face regulatory uncertainty.
The debate comes as AI companies expand their computing infrastructure, increasing pressure on electricity grids, water resources and local communities.
Musk's remarks do not constitute a formal announcement of an orbital data center project. Such facilities would face substantial technical challenges involving power generation, cooling, communications and launch costs.
