Jason Calacanis: OpenAI and Anthropic’s Largest Customers Could Shift to Open Source
Jason Calacanis says major enterprise customers spending $50 million to $100 million annually may leave OpenAI and Anthropic for open-source models or build their own systems.
He argues that models such as Kimi and DeepSeek can run on plentiful last-generation hardware while costing significantly less. According to Calacanis, his own team is already running Kimi at 80–90% lower cost .
He also claims companies such as ElevenLabs, Figma and Lovable are developing proprietary models because they do not want frontier labs competing with them at the application layer.
