NVIDIA Says New Data Center Cooling Systems Dramatically Reduce Water Use
NVIDIA’s Dion Harris says the criticism that data centers waste large amounts of water is increasingly outdated as newer cooling technologies replace traditional evaporative systems.
In an interview on BEP Research, Harris explained that closed-loop cooling systems introduced with Blackwell and extended with Vera Rubin use a sealed glycol-water circuit, similar to a car radiator, rather than continuously drawing water from local supplies.
NVIDIA estimates the technology can save up to 25 million liters of water per day compared with older cooling methods.
The discussion highlights how data center infrastructure is evolving and why public criticism may not always reflect the capabilities of newer hardware. However, water consumption can still vary depending on facility design and cooling requirements.
