Hackers Target France's National Blood Service by Manipulating Freezer Temperatures

France's national blood service, Établissement Français du Sang (EFS), was reportedly targeted in a cyberattack that attempted to raise freezer temperatures from -30°C to 110°C, according to Le Canard Enchaîné.
The attackers allegedly gained access through Coolworld, a company responsible for maintaining storage equipment used by the blood service. The attempted temperature change represented a 140-degree increase that could have compromised stored donor samples.
A technician reportedly detected the abnormal temperature rise before significant damage occurred. France's Health Ministry said the incident had no operational impact.
The reported breach comes amid similar attacks involving temperature-controlled equipment elsewhere in Europe. However, investigators have not established a connection between the incidents.
The case highlights cybersecurity risks associated with third-party maintenance systems and connected equipment used in critical healthcare infrastructure.
