U.S. Semiconductor Stocks Hit Historic Volatility as Index Falls 32%
U.S. semiconductor stocks are experiencing unusually high volatility, with recent market data showing stress levels rarely seen before.
Over the past five months, the S&P 500 Semiconductors & Semiconductor Equipment Index recorded 11 trading sessions in which at least 50% of its components fell 5% or more. This is the fourth-highest reading on record.
For comparison:
- During the 2008 financial crisis, the index recorded 16 such sessions.
- The only periods with higher readings were 2000 and 2002, following the collapse of the dot-com bubble.
The index also declined more than 5% on 12 separate trading days over the past five months.
It is now down 32% from its June peak and trading at its lowest level since April.
The figures highlight the scale of recent turbulence across the semiconductor sector.
