Vitalik Buterin Advocates EIP-8288 Maximalism to Keep Ethereum's Base Layer Minimal

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin is advocating what he calls EIP-8288 maximalism, arguing that complex cryptographic operations should increasingly be handled through client-side STARK proofs rather than additional Ethereum precompiles.
The approach would allow applications to perform computationally intensive cryptography outside the base layer and submit proofs that can be verified on-chain.
Buterin's broader objective is to reduce the need for introducing new specialized cryptographic functions into Ethereum's execution environment.
The proposal reflects Ethereum's ongoing focus on minimizing protocol complexity while supporting advanced applications. However, practical adoption would depend on proof-generation costs, verification efficiency, developer tooling and protocol compatibility.
