Federal Judge Rules Trump Administration’s Anthropic Blacklist Was Unlawful

Anthropic has scored a major legal victory against the Trump administration.
A federal judge ruled that the government violated Anthropic’s First Amendment rights when it labeled the AI company a supply-chain risk.
The court found that the designation amounted to unlawful retaliation over Anthropic’s public criticism of the government’s military AI policy.
The dispute centered on Anthropic’s refusal to allow unrestricted use of its models for areas including mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons.
The Pentagon subsequently moved to restrict Anthropic’s access to federal business and classified the company as a supply-chain risk.
Judge Rita Lin ruled that the government could not use national-security authorities as a way to punish protected speech.
The decision also found due-process problems with how the designation was imposed.
For Anthropic, the ruling removes a major legal and reputational overhang as the company continues expanding its government and enterprise AI business.
