Mysterious Trader Places $147 Million Oil Bet Ahead of U.S. Midterm Election

An anonymous trader has opened more than $147 million in leveraged oil positions on Hyperliquid ahead of the November 3 U.S. midterm elections, as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to drive uncertainty in energy markets.
According to on-chain analytics platform Lookonchain, the trader opened 10x leveraged long positions on November 2, including approximately $91 million in Brent crude futures and $56 million in WTI crude futures. The positions suggest the trader is anticipating further gains in oil prices following the election.
Oil prices moved higher after U.S. officials confirmed limited strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island on November 2. WTI crude futures were trading at $98.11 per barrel, up 1.72% on the day, while Brent crude futures reached $106.50, up 1.68%.
Both benchmarks had fallen more than 7% in the previous session as diplomatic discussions between Iranian and Qatari officials raised hopes of a possible end to the conflict. However, the latest strikes have renewed concerns about further escalation. Oil prices have climbed more than 45% since the U.S.-Israel war with Iran began on February 28.
The trader used Hyperliquid, a decentralized exchange that offers 24/7 trading in leveraged perpetual futures tied to assets including commodities. Its continuous trading access has attracted oil speculators seeking to respond to geopolitical developments outside traditional market hours.
The large position has drawn attention because it was opened just before a major U.S. political event. However, the trader’s identity and actual motivation remain unknown, and the positions do not establish that further military escalation or higher oil prices are certain.
