Base Activates Cobalt Upgrade With New Controls for Tokenized Assets
Base has activated its Cobalt upgrade, adding new functionality designed for tokenized real-world and financial assets.
The upgrade introduces conditional transactions, allowing transfers or other actions to execute only when predefined requirements are satisfied.
It also adds more control for token issuers, including built-in compliance checks and mechanisms for handling corporate actions such as stock splits.
Issuers can also support forced token transfers, a feature that can be important for regulated assets when tokens need to be frozen, recovered or reassigned under specific legal or compliance conditions.
These capabilities move tokenized assets closer to the operational requirements of traditional financial markets.
The tradeoff is that greater issuer control also means some tokenized assets can behave very differently from permissionless crypto assets.
For Base, Cobalt strengthens the network’s infrastructure for institutions looking to issue regulated securities and other tokenized financial products on-chain.
