Google Runs Its First AI Prompt From Space With Project Suncatcher
Google has reached a new milestone in its Project Suncatcher experiment. CEO Sundar Pichai says the team successfully sent a command from Earth to a prototype satellite in orbit.
The satellite powered up its onboard Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), processed an AI prompt, and transmitted its first complete AI-generated response back to Earth.
The test marks an early step toward Google's vision of space-based AI computing, potentially using satellite networks to support future data-center infrastructure.
Major challenges remain, including radiation exposure, thermal management, reliable communications, and the economics of operating computing systems in orbit.
