The GIP Model: Why Changes in Growth and Inflation Matter More Than Their Levels
The Growth and Inflation Paradigm, or GIP Model, focuses on whether economic growth and inflation are accelerating or decelerating rather than simply measuring whether their current levels are high or low.
The framework divides the economic environment into four quadrants: Goldilocks, where growth accelerates and inflation decelerates; Reflation, where both accelerate; Stagflation, where growth decelerates while inflation accelerates; and Deflation, where both decelerate.
Different asset classes may perform differently across these environments as earnings expectations, interest rates and risk appetite change.
The model is intended to guide macroeconomic positioning, not predict every market movement. Its usefulness depends on reliable data, accurate identification of economic trends and recognition that regime transitions can be uncertain.
