US National Debt Reaches $40.5 Trillion, Up 75% Since 2020

US national debt has reached approximately $40.5 trillion, an increase of 75% from the $23.2 trillion recorded at the beginning of 2020, according to Treasury data.
The increase reflects years of federal borrowing as government spending, interest costs and budget deficits have added to the outstanding debt.
The growing debt burden has renewed attention on the sustainability of US fiscal policy, particularly as higher borrowing costs increase the expense of servicing existing obligations.
While the headline debt figure does not indicate an immediate funding crisis, its trajectory remains important for Treasury markets, long-term interest rates and future budget negotiations.
