China and Oman sign digital currency agreement to expand cross-border payment cooperation

China and Oman have signed an agreement to strengthen cooperation on digital payments and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), expanding financial ties between the two countries.
The memorandum of understanding was signed on November 2 by People's Bank of China Governor Pan Gongsheng and Central Bank of Oman Governor Ahmed Al Musalmi during Sultan Haitham bin Tarik's state visit to Beijing.
The agreement covers the exchange of technical expertise and best practices in digital payment infrastructure, regulatory frameworks and emerging financial technologies.
The two central banks also signed a five-year currency swap agreement worth 30 billion yuan ($4.2 billion), equivalent to 1.5 billion Omani rials, aimed at supporting financial stability and facilitating bilateral trade.
China has been developing its digital yuan, or e-CNY, as part of efforts to modernize payment infrastructure and explore digital currency applications.
For Oman, the partnership offers access to China's experience in CBDC development while supporting the country's broader digital economy strategy under Oman Vision 2040.
The agreements could eventually support more efficient cross-border settlements, although neither central bank has announced a timetable for launching a joint CBDC payment system.
