Former Anthropic Researcher Urges U.S.-China AI Deal Before Risks Become “Catastrophic”

Former Anthropic researcher and whistleblower Jacob Coxon is urging President Trump to pursue a direct AI agreement with China before the technology becomes too dangerous to control.
Speaking on Fox News, Coxon warned that artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly and could eventually pose catastrophic risks.
“AI is the only technology that can use itself,” Coxon said.
He argued that the U.S. and China may need to cooperate on limits around the most advanced systems rather than allowing the competition to become an unrestricted arms race.
“I’m not an expert on geopolitics. All I know is the alternative could be catastrophic,” Coxon said.
“What’s needed is essentially a deal… I think President Trump could be a great person to make a deal in the immediate future, a good solid deal with China.”
Coxon also described advanced AI as “essentially a super weapon.”
His warning adds to the growing debate over whether AI safety can be managed through domestic regulation alone or whether the biggest risks will ultimately require coordination between the world’s leading AI powers.
