Alphabet Discloses $548 Million Qualcomm Stake as AI Chip Partnership Expands
Alphabet $GOOGL disclosed a stake of nearly three million shares in Qualcomm $QCOM, valued at approximately $547.9 million as of September. Qualcomm shares gained more than 3% in premarket trading following the disclosure, according to Reuters.
The investment comes amid an expanding technology relationship between the companies. Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors power Google's recently introduced Googlebook laptops, which integrate Gemini Intelligence and on-device AI capabilities.
Qualcomm is also pursuing opportunities beyond smartphones, including custom processors for AI data centers. The company has outlined ambitious revenue targets for the segment as cloud providers look for alternatives to established AI chip suppliers.
Alphabet already develops its own Tensor Processing Units, while Qualcomm brings expertise in energy-efficient processors and connected devices. The disclosed investment adds a financial dimension to their existing relationship, although the companies have not established that the stake was acquired specifically to support Gemini or their joint products.
