Sweden Blocks ChatGPT and Claude on Government Computers, Leaves Copilot Approved

Sweden’s Government Offices are reportedly blocking direct access to ChatGPT and Claude on staff computers starting Monday.
Microsoft Copilot will remain the only approved AI assistant.
The decision appears focused on how government employees access and handle AI tools rather than banning the underlying models themselves.
That distinction matters because Microsoft Copilot can also provide access to Claude models through approved enterprise infrastructure.
In other words, Sweden is restricting the consumer-facing applications while keeping AI available through a controlled enterprise environment.
For governments, this reflects a broader concern around data governance, security and where sensitive prompts or documents are processed.
Enterprise platforms can offer tighter identity controls, logging and administrative oversight than standalone consumer AI tools.
The move therefore looks less like a rejection of generative AI and more like an attempt to centralize how public-sector employees use it.
For Microsoft, policies like this strengthen the strategic value of Copilot as the enterprise gateway through which organizations access multiple AI models.
