Micron ($MU) Funds Indium Corp. Plant Expansion to Secure U.S. Critical Mineral Supply Chain

Micron Technology ($MU) entered into an agreement to finance an expansion of Indium Corp.’s refining and processing facility in Rome, New York, securing a long-term supply agreement for high-purity minerals critical to advanced semiconductor manufacturing. The capital commitment is drawn from Micron's broader $3 billion supply-chain resiliency initiative announced earlier this year, positioning the chipmaker for priority access as its mega-fab complex in nearby Clay, New York, progresses ahead of schedule.
The initiative directly addresses severe supply chain vulnerabilities surrounding critical input materials. The United States produced zero primary indium from domestic ore in 2025, relying entirely on imports, while China controls roughly 70% of global output and previously enacted stringent export curbs on unwrought indium alongside ongoing licensing restrictions on gallium, germanium, and antimony. While Indium Corp. specializes in processing these exact compounds, downstream risks remain as domestic refining capacity continues to depend on raw zinc ore feedstock from global markets.
With Micron posting gross margins above 80% amid surging artificial intelligence memory demand, the strategic funding functions as operational downside protection against geopolitical export shocks rather than an immediate revenue catalyst, ensuring factory line continuity ahead of approaching trade truce deadlines with Beijing.
