MKBHD Advises Upgraders to Pass on Apple's $1,999 Foldable iPhone Duo

Tech reviewer Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) has advised general consumers against upgrading to Apple’s ($AAPL) first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, citing high pricing and several first-generation hardware and software trade-offs. The device launched at a starting price of $1,999 for 256GB—$700 above the iPhone 18 Pro Max—reaching up to $3,199 for 2TB configurations.
While Brownlee praised the 7.6-inch matte internal display, crease concealment, and battery life, he highlighted key drawbacks for prospective buyers:
• Unoptimized third-party apps, including Spotify, Google Maps, Discord, and X, leading to visual letterboxing.
• The replacement of Face ID with a slower fingerprint power button sensor.
• Added bulk and weight compared to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8, which starts at $1,899.99.
• A downgraded camera setup lacking dedicated zoom, ProRes, or Log video capabilities.
Ownership and repair costs present significant financial commitments. Without AppleCare+, repairing the internal display costs an estimated $999, while full unit protection raises total monthly financing to roughly $103.28 over two years. Despite the critical review, initial demand remained elevated, with opening-day preorders selling out and shipping dates slipping into January.
