Brazilian Real Surges Nearly 5% After Flávio Bolsonaro Leads First-Round Vote
Brazilian markets are rallying after Flávio Bolsonaro finished ahead of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the first round of Brazil’s presidential election.
Bolsonaro received roughly 47% of the vote compared with about 45% for Lula, setting up a runoff on October 25.
The Brazilian real strengthened sharply against the U.S. dollar, with market participants pricing in the possibility of a more market-friendly policy shift.
Brazilian equities and overseas-listed Brazilian assets also moved higher following the result.
Investors are particularly focused on fiscal discipline, privatization, tax policy and the potential path for domestic interest rates under the next administration.
A stronger real and improved fiscal expectations could eventually ease inflation pressure and create more room for lower rates, although the final policy direction will depend on the runoff result and subsequent implementation.
For now, the first-round surprise has triggered a significant repricing across Brazilian assets ahead of the decisive October 25 vote.
