$SPY Trading Volume Falls to Record-Low Levels as Market Activity Dries Up

Trading activity in the S&P 500 ETF, $SPY, has collapsed to historically low levels.
Friday volume fell to just 22.6 million shares, the lowest for a full trading session since November 25, 2005.
Excluding sessions around market holidays, it was the lowest reading since October 2004.
Activity weakened even further on Monday, with roughly 18 million shares traded, reportedly the lowest non-holiday volume since 2003.
As a result, $SPY’s 5-day average trading volume has fallen below 30 million shares, its lowest level on record.
The decline suggests investors are increasingly sitting on the sidelines as the market consolidates near elevated levels.
Previous periods of unusually weak volume in December 2024, February 2025 and August 2026 were each followed by S&P 500 pullbacks.
That historical pattern does not guarantee another decline, but extremely low participation can make markets more sensitive to new catalysts once trading activity returns.
The key question is whether this quiet consolidation resolves through renewed buying or whether weak participation becomes another warning sign for the broader rally.
