Gary Marcus Questions Whether AGI Is Really Here

Gary Marcus is pushing back on claims that artificial general intelligence has already arrived.
“If this were really AGI, well, let’s put an asterisk around that. What do you mean by AGI?” Marcus said.
His argument is that the definition matters.
If AI systems had truly reached a level where they could broadly replace human cognitive labor across industries, the economic impact should already be far more dramatic.
Marcus suggested that, under an extreme definition of AGI, you might expect the value of many forms of human labor to collapse, saying “you would expect wages to drop to zero.”
That is not what the economy currently looks like.
The debate highlights the widening gap between rapid improvements in AI capability and disagreement over whether today’s models actually qualify as general intelligence.
For investors, that distinction matters because enormous amounts of capital are being committed on the assumption that AI systems will continue moving toward much broader automation.
