Polymarket expands beyond crypto with 15-minute gold and silver price markets
Polymarket is bringing high-speed prediction markets to precious metals, launching new gold and silver price contracts powered by Chainlink $LINK.
The platform now allows users to take positions on whether gold or silver prices will rise or fall over 15-minute intervals, expanding its short-term trading model beyond cryptocurrencies.
The launch follows the success of Polymarket's existing 5-minute and 15-minute crypto markets, which have generated more than $11 billion in cumulative trading volume, according to Chainlink.
Under the new system, Chainlink provides the price data used to determine market outcomes, helping automate settlement based on predefined price movements.
But here's the interesting part.
Polymarket isn't stopping at precious metals.
The company is planning to introduce similar short-duration markets for equities, foreign exchange, and additional commodities, potentially expanding prediction markets into a much larger segment of global finance.
Unlike traditional futures or spot trading, these contracts focus on predicting the direction of price movements within a fixed time window rather than directly owning the underlying asset.
That also creates risks. Short timeframes can amplify speculative behavior, while trading fees and rapidly changing odds make consistent profitability difficult.
The bigger question is whether prediction markets are evolving into a serious alternative financial trading venue or simply making short-term speculation more accessible.
