Former FDA Commissioner Says Peptides Could Gain Wider Market Access

Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb says it appears regulators may allow broader access to peptide-based treatments.
Speaking on CNBC’s Squawk Box, Gottlieb said, “It looks like they are going to allow peptides onto the market.”
That could be relevant for telehealth companies such as $HIMS if regulatory changes eventually expand the range of treatments that can be offered through online healthcare platforms.
But Gottlieb also raised significant concerns about the category.
He argued that some peptides may not deliver the benefits being promoted and said there is evidence suggesting certain compounds could potentially increase cancer risk.
He did not identify BPC-157 by name during the interview, saying he did not want to misquote the compound.
The comments highlight the central tension around the peptide market.
Broader regulatory access could create a new commercial opportunity for companies such as $HIMS, but questions around clinical evidence, safety and oversight could also create substantial regulatory risk.
Any policy change would need to be evaluated based on the specific compounds allowed and the conditions regulators place around their use.
