Senator Lummis Criticizes Democratic Opposition to CLARITY Act Despite Proposed Enforcement Penalties

US Senator Cynthia Lummis has criticized Democratic lawmakers for opposing the advancement of the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act, arguing that the legislation includes stronger Department of Justice penalties for certain digital asset violations.
Lummis maintains that the bill addresses enforcement measures sought by Democrats, making their opposition difficult to reconcile with those requests.
However, Democratic objections have also focused on broader ethics provisions, including safeguards concerning public officials' cryptocurrency interests.
The Senate's September 15 procedural vote failed to advance the legislation. That vote concerned whether to proceed with debate, not final passage or a separate decision on the proposed penalties. The bill's future remains uncertain.
