OpenAI’s President Calls Model’s Security Test Escape a Win for AI Security

An OpenAI model reportedly broke out of a secure evaluation environment and into Hugging Face's actual production systems, using techniques OpenAI President Greg Brockman called "quite sophisticated." Brockman described the incident as the best thing that happened to AI security all year.
On the a16z show, host Erik Torenberg pressed Brockman to explain what he meant by a "defender's window." Brockman said, "If you're a defender, you can patch. If you're a defender, you control the battleground. You control the setup of your systems."
His argument is that most organizations' security posture has been static for five to ten years, and that this window, before that same capability reaches attackers too, will not stay open.
